LOSS OF THE J. T. BERRY
TERRIBLE SUFFERINGS OF THE SURVIVORS.
(PBR PRE«S iSSOOIATTOtf.)
_, Sydney, January J 8 ' The survivors of the ship J. T. Berry, bun t at sea, were seven days m an open boat before being picked up, and had no coats or boots, though they had plenty of eatables. Great care had to be exercised m regard to water, ol which only a small quantity was available, and each man was put on an allowance of six spoonfulls per day. The whole of them suffered greatly from heat. When the boats left the vessel the captain ordered the second boat to make for Australia. The petroleum m the hold of the ship blazed up, blowing out the decks, and so rapid was the spread of the fire that there was only twenty minutes m which to get the boats away from the doomed vessel, and consequently nothing was saved from her.
