T^lvL OF VM PE LIE'S PETITION. [per Prbss Association.] Gisbornb, January 18. The petition of Mr Wi Pere to upset M> Carroll's elecim for the Eastern Maori District is now being held before tho Chief Justice and Mi Justice Gillies. About a dczm witnonsea wer# examined to prove that Carroll paid for conveyance of eleotors to vote at Opotlkl ; alao that he "shouted" both drink and food; and to prove that MoGarvey, publloan and storekeeper, Te Tako, gave flour, sngar, and drink to Maoris who voted for Carroll, and that he did so by the sitting member's orders. Evidence was also taken that Carroll's father shouts! at Wairoa for Maoris on the condition that they voted for his son. McGarvey m his evldenoe denied that he acted as Carroll's agent, bnt adtniited that he charged goods given to Maoris to Carroll's aoconnt, which had not been paid. The Judge expressed a doubt as to agenoy being* proved. The case will only partly be heard here. Othnr oharges m the petition will be heard »t Napier.
