Sydney, January 18. Through the death of Mr Frederick Chas. Gibbes, member for Newtown, another protectionist fight is imminent. Work at the Newcastle coal mines is slack and wages are depressed, owing to the competition of the Southern mines.
Two cases of sunstroke occurred here to-day. The weather is very hot, and a number of deaths from sunstroke are reported from the country districts. At a sale of Hobartville yearlings the prices realised were moderate, the total being 7060 guineas. The highest received was 275 guineas for a trotter.
A man, whilst endeavoring to drive m a buggy through some bush at Albury, m which a fire was raging, was overtaken by the flames and perished.
