REVISION OF THE TARIFF
The following letter has been forward .>._ by the New Z >alandProtectlon Aesoc'a oc to kindred .associations throughout tho colony : — " Sir — Ac the usual weekly meeting of tbe above Association, heM «n Tuesday last, the following resolution wss nianlmcui'y carried—' That, m via v of the Ouatoms tariff be*ng revised upxt session by tbe Government the Secretary be requested to write to kindred Associations and aac them to join the Association m reoommending the. Government to prepare a Customs tariff that is now In operation In Victoria, whicb has given ■ach satlsfaotiin and worked so well that It has enabled that colony to take the premier position amongst tbe Australian colonies. After having seen tariff pro* potali prepared by several kindred Associations m New Zealand, and none of them agreeing, we have come to the conclusion that it ia better not to grop_ any longer m the dark, but to at ones adopt a Ouatoms tariff that haa been tried and found to work satisfactorily to a large majority of the people ln Viotoria, and whloh she is now prospering under. We feel that it would be better, and give more satisfaction to adopt a tariff tbat laJcnown to work well In a colony similarly situated to onr own. Wa feel that by adopting the ViotorUn tariff, and asking Government io adopt It also, Parliament wili be more likely to fall m with those views, knowing that the Associations throughout New Zealand were satisfied with the said tariff Wa therefore ask yonr Association to join with ns m nrglnp the Government and representatives of Pari -ment to prepare and pass the above tariff at the next ■esaloh of Parliament, as further delay would be detrimental to the industries and productions of New Zsaland. You will no'doubt agree with us that a change for the better is very necessary to this o.lony at the present time, and we feel that unanimity amongst kindred Associations it necessary to bring about a better state of ai? drs. An early and favorable reply will be anxiously looked for, as it is neoessary to have the matter deoided at once, m ordar to make suggestions to the Government that tbey may bave time to prepare their tariff, and also for the aeveral Associations to consult with tbe M.H.R/a m their locality."
