NEW WALES SOUTH.
Sydney, January 16. A fire broke cut m the monkey house at the Zoological Gardens yesterday, and resulted m its total destruction. A number of monkeys, rare birds and snakes belonging to the valuable collection were destroyed.
The activity m mining stocks stil continues here and at Melbourne, bu prices are receding.
The cricket match, Shrewsbury's team v New South Wales, was continued to-day. The following are the principal scores, New South Wales second innings : — Garrett 18, Burton 12, Moses 109, O'Donnell 16, Allen 14, Ferris not ont 18. The total was 315* The Englishmen require 283 runs to win;
The City Corporation have determined to carry out large retrenchments and 250 men have already received notice that their services will be dispensed with. An annual saving of will thus be effected. It is expected that further reductions will follow.
There have been large arrivals of New Zealand bran and oats, the latter being of prime and stout quality, and quoted at as id to as sd.
