A rather interesting question as to the disposal of dipaomanjaoa arose at the R,M. Court this morning. Sergeant Folton, m applying fora remand of Charles Hunter, who recently attempted suicide, to Addington, pointed out that some time ago a man named Nolan who waßsent:from Ashburton to Addington gaol for medical treatment, died at tbe latter plaoe, and thereupon the Minister at that time issuod an order that no more such oases should be sent to gaols. Under this order Mr Baddeley, the former R.M. here, refused to oommit persona suffering from drink to Addington, and Sergeant Felton asked if Mr Ollivier intended to follow the same course as hia predecessor. Mr Ollivier said that he would take no notioe of the Minister's order whatever. The Aot distinctly laid down what Presiding Magistrate's should do m suoh pases, and itwaa not competent for a Minister or anybody else to vary the intention of tho Act ; this oould only be done by an Order m Council. Magistrates had no more power to oommit dipsomaniaos to hospitals than to a private houso. He granted the remand to Addbgton aßked for, at the same time Ugrotting that tho institution whioh had bean miintamed at Sunnyside during ths Provincial daya, for the treatment of dipsomaniaoa, had now oeaasd to exist.
