A DEMAND FOR BLUE GUM LEAVES
Those who ha?e a quantity of blue gum trees growing on their property are In a fair way of having nn addition made to their income from the sale of the leaves. From the San Francisco " Chronicle" we (" Anokland News ") hear that the many growera of the enoalyptus trees on the cntakJrts of Oakland have been able to utilise their product m a ptouljar but at the same time profitable way of late There has been a great demand for the leaves of the qu ckJy growing "gams," occasioned by the increased manufacture of the enca'yp'ua boiler scalet m which a local firm is extensively engaged at present. The use of the "scale" is ia preventiug corrosion m steam boilers It prevents the formation of carbonate of lime, eulphate of lime, or carbonate of magnesia scale, aud gradually removes the old formation of tcale on the interior of boilers. The encalyptns preventive hse been adopted, and ia now io usa on moat of the American steamship liueß, the United States navy, and m thousands of stationary boilers It is an inexpensive material, and has displaced zlno as a remedy for lime and magnesia scales m nearly all parts of the world. One thing whioh recommends the use of the eucalyptns is that it will not cause water to prime, but will prevent priming from water containing alkalies. The company engaged m the preparation of the leave* for the purpose named has found the industry a very profitable one. It is to be hoped that the merits of this plan of treating steam boilers will be tried m Auckland, and if found tqaaliy useful here a* m California, there Bhould be a consider able demand for blue gom leaves, and thus a new Bourn* of income omvlded.
