THE EUROPEAN SITUATION
[Per Press Absouation.] Bkriin, January 2. At the reception held by the Emperor of Germany to-day there was a large attendances of diplomatists and officials. No political allusions were made, but the Emperor, conversing lately with his principal officers, expressed satisfaction at the improved situation. St. Petersburg, January 3. The " Journal de St Petersbourg," semi-officially opines that the publication of the despatches removes the mistrust which existed, and practically closes the incident. Lorooir, January 4. It is rumored that if Russia recognises the annexation of Alsace and Lorraine, Germany will arrange an Austro-Russian agreement respecting Bulgaria. It is also reported that the valuables m the Imperial Chateaux m Poland have been removed to the interior. Vienna, Jaonary 3. The official feeling here has suddenly become confident of peace, the Russian Military Attache declaring that the Czar is absolutely 'opposed to war.
