A BIG SUBMARINE TUNNEL SCHEME

A big submarine tunnel scheme is at present onder the consideration of the Dominion Government, the promoters being an English syndicate. The proposal bto connect Prince Edward Island with the mainland by means of a tunnel, the advantages of which would be enormous, as for several moi.tbs navigation is closed by the lee. By the terms under which the Island entered the Confederation m 1873 the Dominion of Canada undertook to maintain communication between the Island and the mainland all the year round, snd this bas to be done by tricar 8 of iceboats at a heavy expense. In the winter mails and passengers are carried across the Strait by these boat* from C*pe Traverse In Prince Ed ward Island to Oape Furmenton m New Brunswick. Two alternative pUna have been drawn by Mr Greathead, 0.X., of Westminister, on the principle on which he designed the ur der-' ground tramway whioh {9 being built from the city to the Elephant. The length by one plan wou'd be about about five miles, and by the other about nine. It is estimated that the cost to the Dominion of the existing service is About £40,000 per annora, and the syndicate offer to eonstruot the tunnel for, an annual subsidy equal to that amount for fifty years, so that the annual payment would not be greater, and it would oease at the end of half a century. A counter scheme of a Yankee syndicate is - also spoken of. Prince Edward Island Is nearly 160 miles long by 3* miles broad and has a popnlation o* over 100.000.
