RAILWAY TRAIN TELEGRAPHY
The success of what is called " railway train telegraphy " ia now assured, and Ootobe* 6, 1887, will be a red-letter day m the history of the electric telegraph. On tbat day says tbe " English Mechanic" A special train lef Jersey Oity with about SSO members of the Ebctrlc Olub, and guests of the Consolidated Bailway Telegraph Company, m order to witness the working of the Bystem on tbe Lehigh Valley railroad. The system la a combination of the best features of the Inventions of Edison, Gilliland. Pbelps, and Smith, and although tbe speed often reached a rate of about 60 miles an hour messages were sent from and received on the train without difficulty, although the current or tbe " Induction " had to jump from thß train to the line wires, a distance of 25ft. About 400 message* were- cent as the train ran from Perth j anction to Eas ton, amongst them a rather long one from Colonel Gouraud to Mr John Pender In London. At the dinner subsequently held by tbe Eleotrlo Olub, Colonel Gouraud said tbat, accustomed as be was to the surprises of electrical science, the day's performance bad been * * revelation. "
