London, December 25

News has been received from Massowah that Mr Portal, First Secretary to the British Diplomatic Agency at Cairo who was charged by the Imperial Government to act as one of the mediators between the Abyssinians and the Italians, has returned to Massowab. Mr Poital reports that the natives accorded him a friendly reception, but could not be prevailed upon to sue for peace, Ras Aloula, the Abyssinian general, having interposed hindrances so Mr Portal's mission.
