Wbli,in«ton, December 26 The weather to-day waa fine for the holiday, bnt a strong wind wag blowing, which interfered with the harbor excursions. The excursion to Pioton was abandoned owing to the boisterouß weather. The principal attraction m town was the Foresters' Sports on the Basin Reserve, which were attended by 6000 people. The principal event of four distances, wpb won by J. Scott, A number of exaorsloniata left town this morning to attend the races at Palcoertton Maeterton and Lower Valley. Ao yet not a single accident is reported. Chbistchttrch, December 26. On Sa urday John Rotbery, aged 19, son of Henry Bothery, was drowned m Lake Elleemere.

Two hours later hia corpse was discovered with the top of his head blown off, and a magfz ne rifla beside him. On the body was a letter to. his wife, and & note bidding gcod-bje to all. The deceased wee thirty six years of age. He had been five yeare m the Sixth Dragoons ac a private, and two yearß m the police force. At the Inquest a verdict of "Death from a gunshot wound, eelf-ioflicted while m a atate of temporary insanity," was returned. Bis wife is'at Moeraki, and he was to bare joined her to-day. Inybboabgill, December 26. Heavy rain fell all day on Sunday, and today has been overcast and gloomy, with frequent showers and strong winds. Holiday traibs and outdoor amusements were very meagrely patronised. The ram was, however, much wanted, there bavin^ been something approaching a water famine In town, while the crops are Buffering from laok of moisture.
