THE CATTLE OF SOUTH AMERICA
There are immeuse herds of cattle In Uroguay aad the Argentine Confederation whica are only kept from active competition with American beef In the English markets by the faot that they are of sach wretched quality that no one wants their /neat. But the cattJe-ownera m that faraway region are rapidly realising the necessity for Improving the character of their etock, and for aotne time past there has been an active movement of Improved cattle In that direction from England. During the month of July last thece were exported from England sixty-five shorthorns, of which sixty-two went to South America, and within two months about two hundred and fifty Herefords have been exported to the same country. It will not take long at this rate to make a decided impression upon the immense stocks of the pampas, and afford some good cattle for shipment^ This competition muse be met some day, but we have a long start m the way of cattle improvement, and if we keep on eliminating the scrub and supplying his place with animals of Improved blood, thisgencntion will probably not be inoonvenlenoed by competition team below the equator.—- --" Breeders Gszatte."
