A ceremony of s very interesting nature took place at St. Stephen's Church yesterday, on the occasion of the marriage of Mr Robert William Hart to Miss Nelly Shury, , eldest daughter of Mr Shury, the manager of the local branch of the Union Bank. The Church, whioh was prettily decorated with flowers and evergreens, was orowded with j friends, and the service, whioh partook of a oboral nature, was celebrated by tbs Rev E. A. Soott. The bride was accompanied by her father and four bridesmaids (Miss Sophy and Miss Janet Shury, Bisters of the bride • and Miss Hart and Miss Minnie Hart, siaterß of the bridegroom). The bridegroom was attended by his brother, Mr R. Hart. The bride wore a dress of white cashmere, handsomely trimmed with duohesse lace. Her veil was of |tulle, with the usual nuptial orange blossoms m her hair. The latter were secured by a golden spray of wheatear and poppies joined by a golden Boythe, the gift 0 the bridegroom. The happy couple left by the express train for the North, accompanied by tbe best wishes of their numerous friends. The bride was the happy recipient of numer. oub handsome presents. These partook for the most part of the useful and ornamental combined, and consisted of artioles to be found iv every well-regulated household. These comprised artioles m silver— such as cruets, piokle stand, cases of very handsome dessert kniveß and forks, butter cooler, case of carvers and fish slice and fork, marble olook, tea and ooffee set (pink and gold), dinner and dessert service, bracelets, elegant fan, and a host of useful niok-naoka too numerous to specify. The weekly session of the Dawn of Peace Lodge, No. 164, 1.0. G.T., was held m the Lodge Room, Saunders' Buildings, on Monday evening, Bro J. Dalley, W.C.T., presiding. There was a good attendance of members and visitors. After routine business had been disposed of, several matters of interest to the Order were disoussed. It was deoided to hold a meeting for prayer onoe a quarter. The W.O.T. and P.W.O.T. were appointed a Committee to confer with Sons and Daughters of Temperance m the matter of proposed temperanoe demonstration. A^harmony meeting wiU be held next lodge?_ight, Jan. 3rd, when an enjoyable gathering is expeoted. Bro Hardley was appointed L.D., and Bro G. W. Andrews representative to the Grand Lodge, whioh meets m Wellington m January next. The lodge was closed m due form by the W.O.T. An Inspection Parade ot the Ashburton Volunteers was held last evening at the Drill Shed, Major Newall being inspecting officer. The Rifles mustered 37 (Oapt* Dolman) and Guards 38 (Oapt. Sparrow)* The companies were exercised m battalion drill by Major Douglaß, and manual and firing exercise by Capt. Dolman. Before dismissing, Major Newall expressed himself satisfied with the drill, and hoped both companies would oontinue to work hard and keep up their present standard. We might remind Volunteers who have not done their class firing that it must be completed before the end of the year. An extraordinary new white wheat is described m the English papers as producing 80 to 88 bushels per aore, with length of straw seven feet, whioh, it is thought, will plaoe wheat growing m England on a better footing than has previously been the oase. This wheat is perfeotly disti not, is boarded, but tbe twno drop off at harvest. The oha_ is smooth, the berry is white, and the quality unusually good for such an enormous yielder. It has been grown by Messrs Oakshot and Millard, of Reading.
