An excursion to Mount Somers will take ! plaoe to-morrow. A Bpeoial train haa been laid on, leaving Ashburton at twenty minute 3 to ten, and returning at 8 o'olock. Aa entertainment and coffee supper, will oe held this evening m Saunders' Buildings, m conneotion with the temporary closing o£ the Ashburton Temperance Club for the summer months. An enjoyable programme has been prepared and members are par tienlary repueßted to attend. We soarcely need remind our readers of the opening ceremony m connection with the Masonic bazaar, whioh takes place to-morrow afternoon, when Mr John Ollivier will conduct the inaugural proceedings. To those who may be contemplating a visit to our local colliery we would suggest that a visit to the bazaar m the evening would be a pleasant termination to a day spent amongst the hilly regions of Mount Somers. In some of the great saw-mills of the Western States of America circular aaws of Gft. diameter are run at about 750 revolutions per minute, and they have been driven at a speed of 880 revolutions. When working at 750 revolutions the teeth of the saw will travel at the rate of nearly 3 miles m a minute.

The " City of London Directory " shows that no less than 105 newspapers and periodicals have offices actually m Flee fc street, wherein are 193 houses. The Opunake correspondent of the " Hawera Star " writes :— " The Stella was m the bay this week taking soundings, it is supposed with a view to reporting on the suitableness of a jetty to asßiat the looal trade, but nothing autbentio is heard."
