ASHTON SCHOOL.

The ordinaiy me tins of the Committee was held on Monday evening, the sfch mat Present — Messrs G. Gilmour (chairman) T. Magee, J. Cro) r , D. Ryan, W. Oroy, J. Ashton, and J Frown. The Chairman reported that the work authorised by the Committoe had been carried out satisfactorily. A circular was road from the Board of Education with regard to cortain reforms which wore likely to be brought about m the future arrangements with teachers The Master's report was road and ap proved of. Ihe number on roll was stated to be 52, with a good average attendance. The school was examined on the 25th, and the result was considered most satisfactory. — It was resolved that a vote of thanks be conveyed to the Muster and Mistress, congratulating thorn oa the very creditable report ond tha efficient state of the school. A letter was read from Mr T. Taylor, on behalf of the Committee of the Ashton Singing Clasa, offering £2 as part proceeds of the late concert, towards tho purchase of prizes for the children . It was decided that the Committee be thanked for that ofEer, and that the donation be supplemented by an equal amount ; that the Master and Mistress be asked to purchase suitable books, and arrangements made for the prizes to be distributed on tho 23rd iast. The following is the report on the examination hold on tha 25th inst. : — Presented, 51 ; per centogo of passes, 54 ; per centage of failures, 6. Only 2 failn r es occur, which are both m one of the higher Standrds, viz., Standard V. The school was last examined on the 26th of January of tbe present year, S3 that Borne allowance must be made for the upper classes. The following are the Inspector's general remarks :— tc Tho Bchool, notwithstanding the short porioi of preparation, has passed a very ! satisfactory examination. "In the lower sections the preparatory classes are of fine promise, their arithmetic being accurate, rapid and sound, and their interest and attention exceptionally good . Standard I. is fair . ' ' The object lessons given by the Mistrees to Standards 111, IL and 1., and pupils m conjunction are of a superior character. "In the upper section of the Bchool work Standard ll [. deserves special notice for full and intelligent answering, and the general proficiency may bo considered pood, the only substantial exception being the .arithmetic of Standard V., which shows tho necessity of applying reasoning powers to the solution of simple problems; W.
