Auckland. November 25. The City Counoil have deoided to withdraw from a oontract entered entered into with Aahoroft and Co., of Wellington, for the lighting of the city with electricity, m oonsequenoe of Borne delay m beginning the work. J. 0. Firth's offer respecting the eleotrio light has been referred to a committee to report. A telegram .has been received by Mr Philips, Town Clerk, from Mr Goldie, M.H.B , requesting that an arrangement ba made m regard to the unemployed m the oity, as the Government promised to find work. The Minister of Public Workfl suggested that work be taken up m the Domain, and it ia proposed to lot a contraot for making three carriage drives whioh are to bo formed there. At St. James' Hall to-night, Mr P. Macarthur, M.P. for Cornwall and member of Mr Gladstone's party m the Houße of Commons, addressed a orowded meeting m favor of Home Rule for Ireland. He spoke for over one hour and a half, and was frequently applauded. At the termination of his address, a resolution was carried expressing confidence m the leaders of the English party, espeoially Mr Gladstone, and protesting against the treatment of Mr O'Brien. Cheers were given for Messra Gladstone and Macarthur. Wellington, November 25. Lysaght and Co. have received cable advices announcing a rise of 103 per ton on galvanised iron. Mr T. W. The accused was remanded, Ohbistohueoh, November 25 Mr Franois Arenas, who, as Spanish ViceConsul, got up a relief fete for the sufferers by the earthquakes m Spain, and took a prominent part m the Jubilee oelebrations, was to-day presented with a gold watch by a number of citizens on his departure from Christohuroh. A Coroner's enquiry was held to-day into the fire at St. Albans on Ootober 30, when a oottage occupied by W. J. Oulver was destroyed. Cqlver's furniture and effeotn were insured for £50 m the Standard and £50 m the Colonial. Among the goods were a large number of books. No remains of the books were found among the debris. The evidenoe showed the house to have been rather poorly furnished. There was no evidence to show the cause of the fire. Drew, master of the schooner Awarua, of Derry Castls fame, and Dennis Fox, his mate, charging thorn with a breach of the seal fisheries regulations by having killed ten seal 3at the Auckland Islands on the loth of August, and further with having 176 seal okiua on board the vessel on 22nd August, the same being tho close season.
