Casualties. .Auckland, November 21. Jas. Leaoh injured at West Hamilton station yesterday died at the hospital before an operation could be performed. Frank Kneebone, a miner, was killed m the Kaipanga mine Ooromaodel on Saturday night. A truck fell down a Bhaft 300 fget when Kneebone was working at the bottom and smashed m hia aku.ll. Mayoral. A. E. Devore has been re elected mayor of Auckland ; no opposition. F. J. Jones haß been elected mayor of Newton. M Niccoll has been re-elected mayor of Devenport. W. M. Morgan and F. O, Clayton are candidates for the Newmarket Mayoralty. Electric Lighting In reference to the electric lighting of Auokland city Mr J. 0. Firth has written to the Town Clerk as follows :—•« I am prepared to negotiate with the Oity Oounoll with the view of lighting the oity by the electric light at any time that may be convenient to the Counoll. lamln a position to light Queen street almost at once ; that ia I could have it ready to light up at Christmas if the Counoll Is willing to have the trial made without delay. It m not improbable that owing to a delay m carrying out AsLcroft and Company's contract, the Council will decline to have it proceeded with. An Expert Criminal. Ellen Franoeß Brown pleaded guilty at the Police Court to-day to endeavoring to ohtaln money by false pretences. Mr Bnddeley 8.M., said the aoouaed was evidently an old hand at th a sort of thing. She was a most dangerous woman to be at Inrge as no man was safe whilst ■ she was about. The prisoner had nothing to say except she did not know it was a crime to register an adopted child as her own. She was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment with hard labor. Shipping. Wellington.
