A HOVEL-CONTEST
"Beli'a Sporting Life" gives an Interesting account of a contest between a cyclist and a horseman. The wheelman was Jaok Keen, an ex-champlon, and the horseman a Newmarket jockey named J. Kellew. The distance was twenty miles, and the event was contested on the Crystal Palace track, m the presence of 40,000 persons. Daring the race the horse had to take tbirty-two hurdles. At a signal being given the horse datmed away with the lead At two miles Kellew made his first change, this causing him to lose a little, so that when Keen completed three miles he was half a lap to the good. Keen completed five miles ml 6 minutes 18seo8. Kellew agained ohanged horses. At eight mllea the horseman had oleared thktj -two hurdles, At ten miles, covered by Keen m 34mln 30?eo, he wan leading by two laps. Kellew gradually gained on the oyollßt, till at fifteen miloßthe latter was barely atop to the good. Entering on the lest round Keen was but 60 yards ahead of the horseman, piling on every Inch. He had a good horse under him, wbioh eventually carried him m the winner by 26 yards, Time — 1 hoar 12mii 13ieo.
