CAPTIIN COOK'S RELICS
4 Sir Saul Samuel, baa secured for the Hew South Wales Government the whole of the Interesting collection of Captain Cook's relics which were on view at the late Colonial and Indian Exhiptlon. Some of them he has had to purchase, others hare been^ presented as a gift, Conclnßivn tvidence la each case that the relics were the genuine property of Captain Ooelc haa been obtained by the Agent-General of New Sonth Waleß. Many of them have been m the possession of the captain's family ever since his death, while others, whose authenticity ia well vouched fcr, have been broaght from the Pacific. Amongst the latter are & number of clasp knives and weapons of different descriptions, cookmg utensils, and various objects of local Interests, such *s a feather cloafc 5 which was thrown over Captain Cook's shoulders by King K*lnnlopuu, of Hawaii, on January 26, 1779 when Cook wag at th« height of royal fAVor, and believed to be a divini'y, and a feather helmet. There ia also Cook'o dress awori o- banker*, hia « ourt shoe Duckies, and a waistcoat of Tahiti cloth embrolderep by his wife, m which it was toped he would make a visit to Court if he retained from his last voyngo. The collection farther includes some New Zealand ear ornaments, which were pre ■acted to the captain by a Maori chief the Bible with which he was accustomed to conduct Divine aervJce during Mr three voyages, his autograph account of the transit of Venus, an oriental box which was the first present he made to hfs wife a pfece of the reck upon which he w«« , killed, and an arrow which Is said to have been partly made from the small bone of I All leg.
