LIQUID FUEL EXPERIMENTS
Last autumn ibe Kuaiian Government adopted a new type of liquid fuel faroaoi-, Invented by Lieutenant I'aßhinin, for the torpedo boat Lerke. Experimental tr'-pa before the clone of the season demonatrati d the success of the new invention, but no details were published as to results obtained, Since then the same furnnce has been Gtted to two steamoro built by the firm of Buiz and Cb., ht Petersburg, fur service on the River Oxus. A trial with these took place a few days ago, m the preaenoo of a large number cf influential personages, and, according to the " Novoe Vremya," waa again a complete BUCCOEB. The trial demonstrated that lib of petroleum refueo evaporated 15.611 b of water, or 2] times more than coal. During the consumption of thelfquld fuel, a sheet of white paper was held at a height of 14in above the funnel, and at the end was neither discoloured nor marked with traces of soot. Compared with other systems m use m Bassla, tbe " Novoe Vreroya" Bays that whereaß the proportion between the expenditure of coal and oil refuse is 2 to 3, the proportion of tho new invention is 1 to 2j. Probably further praoice will lead to better results than I even these, r.s at present, owing to the I low price of liquid fuel, Russian engineers have no inducements to be economical, At Baku the price per ton is often as low as 4d, and the question of economy is never thooght of at all. On the V >Iga, however, tbn case Is different, and the further from B*ku tbe more careful the engineers are found to be. It is expected that Pashinin'e furnnce will be applied this year to- a large number of torpedo boats io tbe Bltok Sea, where <he. supply of liquid fuel ia row plentiful. — v tw gineering,"
