SPORTING.
■ I. METHVBM SPORTS AND RACES. A meeting to arrange for carrying out the annual races and sports on New Year's Day was held at the Methven Hotel on Thursday evening There was a fair attendance of residents from all parts of the district. Mr Hmry G. Baker was voted to the chair. Mr J. Hibba, Treasurer, read the balauce-aheet for last gathering, which showed tnat there was a balance of £19 3s m hand aftar paying all liabilities. The balanoe-sheet was unanimously received and adopted. It was resolved that the races and sports be held on Monday, January 2nd, 1888. The following officers were appointed subject to their accepting the respective offices, viz., President, D. Cameron (Springfield) ; Vice Presidents, T E. Upton, W. McMillan, and Henry O. Baker. Horse Races :— Judge, G. B. Alington ; Starter, E. W. Powyer ; Handicappers, William Rouse, J. Devery, and J. ttiichrist. Athletic Events : — Judge, James Nee ; Starter, W.- Wrathil ; Clerk of the Course, G. Coward; Treasurer, Jonathan Hibbe ; Secretary, J. G. MoWilliam, and a large and influential Committee (all officers to be ex officio members of Committee) After considerable discussion, a programme, consisting of six horse races, and twelve athletic events, wjiS adopted. The Secretary was instructed to write to the Railway Department and ask if they would run a morning train from Rakaia and an evening train to Rakaia on the day of the sports, and if the request was granted to notify the same on the programmes. Between £12 and £13 subscriptions were promised m the room, and the Kceting ad journed till November 23rd.
