With reference to the action of the German Commodore at Samoa, the correspondent of the " Sydney Daily Telegraph " states that " it is more and more apparent every day that the action of Germany has been directed by the Deutsche Handel Company (the big German firm). Tamasese's people have mortgaged their lands to the German firm to the extent of 60,000 dollars to purchase firearms. These arms, which cost the. Company about 10 dollara a piece, were eo'd for 60 dollars, while the British traders have been prevented by their Government from trading m arms or ammunition. These mortgages
were invalid by the law of Samoa unless
oountersigned by the King. Malietoa, of , course, refusedj to sign mortgages whioh bad been given for the purpose of providing thoße who had rebelled against his authority with arms. Tamasese was appointed King by the Germans with a view of making these mortgages valid. It is also expected that he will be a pliant tool— mindful of German interest and m everyday .subservient to their power."
The " Evening Herald's " Wellington cor. swpondent Jsaya :■— •• The Government are ■ngaged m going over the Estimates to see where items can be eliminated or where rtduoed, but they find that the late Governm«nt curtailed to suoh an extsnt that little is left to be done m the way of departmental savings exoept neoeisary services are dispensed with. One Minister hes expressed surprise at finding how maoh had been done by the late Government m the way of economising. Replying to its own query, "Is Major Atkinson equal to his task," the " Evening Post " says :— " We hesitate to answer the question farther than to Bay that his past reoord is not calculated to inspire an affirmative reply. It is impossible to forgot that on a previous oooasion, under some similar circumstances, he took such a pessimist view of the situation that his Finanoial Statement caused widespread dismay at home and abroad, seriously injured the credit of tht colony m London, and intensified the very evil he deplored and professed a desire to remedy."
Great Britain has ooneluded a treaty with
the King of the Tonga Islands, under whioh that Monarch will cede nothing to Foreign Powers without the assent of England, and this treaty is an unpleasant surprise to Germany, as the Tonga Islands have been considered a promising field* for Germany enterprise.
The Wellington correspondent of the
Evening Star" says:— Much was made during the eleotions of the fact of a retiring allowance having been paid to Mr Seed and of three other offioerg beiQg employed to do his work. The matter was referred to Mr Goldie by the Auckland Finanoial Reform Aisooiation, and his inquiries show that the whole affair is a mare's nest, The men who Bre doing his work were already m the Government service, and they get slight advanoes m pay, while an extra olerk at £100 is also employed. Whsn thosa sums are added to the retiring allowance of £666, the whole amount shows a saving of £75 per annum on £1000 a year whioh was paid Mr Saed, and a large saving when the pension expires.
SANDER AND ? SONS' E^OALPTI EXTRACT.— In protection of the world-wide fame our manufacture has acquired all over the globe, we publish the following:— Hazard, M.D., Professor of General Pathology and Diseases of the Mind and Nervous System, says m an editorial published m tbo " Chuical Record " :— " We have examined half a dozen specimens of different manufactures ; the preparation of Sander and Sons' was the only one that proved to be reliable and corresponding to scientific tests." Another oonoootion called "Eefined Extract of Eucalyptus," has made its appearance since. This produot stands, aoooording to Dr Owen, foremost m causing injurious elleots. That gentleman oommunioates at a meeting of the Medical Society of Viotoria that a child living at fitzroy beoame most seriously indisposed through its use. In another case a lady states on the strength of statutory declaration that sesnffered cruelly from the effeots of the same conoootion. To guard the high reputation of our manufacture we feel warranted m exposing the above faots, and desire the public to exeroise care and preoau* tion when buying.— SANDER AND SONS'. — (Advt.)
