THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA
Abbe Larr leu, foinurlya xnislooary m | Ohina has published a pamphlet ou the Gieat Wail of Ohina to demonstrate that it does not and has never existed. The popular belief is that this wall (stretches for about 800 leagues across Ohina, from the sea to the province of Kaneu, that it is wholly constructed of oat stone, and 30 cubits high by 12 broad. It is believed to ran straight on regardless of obs'aoles. going down valleys and up mountains without a brcaV, except euoh an time haß made, along its whole course. This Dotion originated with a Jesuit named Martini, who visited Ohina about 1650, | and his description waa followed by subeeI qaent writers. Abbe Larr leu has lived for several years under what would have been the thadow of the Great Wall had there been one ; ha has s'udied the writings of reoent writers — especially Abba Hue — who have crossed the line of the alleged wall m various place ; he has likewise studied the Chinese history of the BuVj?ct, and his conclusions are ea follows :— (1) The term " Great Wall " is at the bottom of all the misunderstanding, and it coraei from the Cioese expression " the wall of the ten thousand li ; " (2) ai described by Martini and other writers who have co(l)d him, thla wall doeß not and never did exlet ; (3) a Chinese Emperor undoubtedly did conceive the Idea of a great wall from the Gulf of L;lao-Long on the east coast of |£»nau on the west, and this, though never realised, hsd a beginning ; (4) all along the proposed line of the wall square towers of earth, or of earth faced with brlok, were constructed at consider able distances from each other, but these were never joined together by any wall ai was originally intended. In some of the defiles along the route there are walla bat these were intended to close these particular pit sages, or they are merely the walls of villages, and are not part of i larger scheme. Hence the only pact o the scheme of the Great Wall carried ou was the coaatruotiop qf these ecatterec towers ; the rest never went beyond thi brain th*t conceived it, it was never mon than a fancy, and it is now a myth. Thi huge Chinese wall, says Abbe Larr leu, i « huge Chinese lie, and, as for the miliioi ■oldiers which were said to guard it nigh wi i*j> tb»y ire mytt}i llktwiie,
