The show of draught horses wm -a \ premier feature, the number of exhibits being large and the quality superb; For the prizes offered for best entire of any age, there were three competitors, Mr WrafchaH's Rantln Robin, Mr Crilmonr's Kelvin (by Prince Royal,) and Mr A. Dawson's Major. All were, m the pink of oondltiou, but Kelvin's claim to precedence oould not be disputed he once more carried off first honor, Major taking second. The olass for three-year-old entires brought into the ring a splendid entry of five, far and away the best lot of their age ever seen tn Ashburton, and such as it would. be hard to beat m Soot'and itself. There were, Mr Max Ftiedlander's Johnny's Fanoy, by Lord Salisbury dam Sally 2nd, bred by Mr James Gow, of the Taletl ; Mr Thomas Langley's Conqueror, also by Lord Salisbury, out of Sootoh Annie ; Mr John Small's Vanquisher, by Young Vanquisher (imported), dam Tibblt by Prince Royal ; and Mr Dennis McHend>y'a Dlplcg macy, by Lord Beaconsfield, dim Pleasant, bred by Mr J. Grlgg{ The Judgeß took groat pains with thli class, and eventually awarded first honors to Diplomaoy, a judgment m whioh the spectators seemed generally to concur, Conqueror being placed, second, Vanquisher third and Johnny's Fanoy fourth. Messrs Friedlandet Bros*, upaolal prize of 3 guineas for the best 3-year old entire, the property of a resident io| the oounty following, the verdict being awarded to Diplomaoy. Of 2 year-old entires, there was only one entry, but what was laoklug m number was fully made up In quality. Messrs Clarke Bros' winning a well deserved first prlza for a very bandaome and promising youngster,, a tioh bay (Hero), showing nearly ell the goed points of his Biro Kelvin. His dam is the well-known mare, Blossom, herself one of the aristloracy of her bread. Hero took first prize as a yearling last year and bids fair to add many more to his limits m years to oome. The show of brood mares In foal, or with foal at foot, was magnificent, Mr Small contributing two, Messre Clarke Bros', three, and Messrs J. Grigg end A; Frisby two eaoh, making altogether a ring of nine of superb quality. First honors were awarded to a grand bay mare, Flower (m foal to Young Banker), the property of Clarke Brothers; second to Mr A. Frieby's "Jewel," Mr J. Grlgg's Fanny being highly oommended. For best mare with two of progeny, there were three entries, two contributed by Messrs Clarke Bros., and the third by Mr John Small. The latter oonslsted of the well-known prize-winner Darnel, with three-year-old and yearling fillies, both by Kelvin. Messrs Clarke Bros, showed their mare Blossom with the pr*z. -winner Hero and a four-year-old Flower by Grown Prince, also -he mare Missy with Violet and Duke, both by Lincolnshire Hero, The last named exhibitor were place! first with Blossom, and obtained a highly commended for their other exhibits, second priza being awarded to Mr Small. Of dry mares, there was an'excellent show of five, Messrs Clarke Bros, contribution three and Messrs Gilmour and Shearer one each. The Red Rlbon of precedence was adjudged to Clarke Bros. Marchioness, Beaond prize to the same owners 1 Bess, and highly commended to Mr John Shearer's Jane, by Victor, Of three-year-old fillioß, a triplet was led to the ring. Mr Small exhibiting two draughts by Kelvin, Dlament and Polly, and Messrs Clarke Bros Luoy, out of Blossom, by tha same Blre. They were placed as entered, viz, Diamond first, Polly aeoond, and Lucy third. Five two-year-olds faced the Judges, but do not call for any speolal remark. First honors went to Mr John Shearer for a filly by Kelvin, and seoond to Mr Hafland Grayburn for Uno, |by Snprise. The speolal priza offered by Mr John C'Shea for best two-year-old by Royal Conqueror w«s awarded to a big upstanding oolt shown by Mr Daniel McS weeny. Of yearling fillies, there were three shown, a very fair lot, fi.Bt prizs falling to Messrs Mawson Bros, Pride of the Isles, by Prince of the Isles (imported), B.cmd to Mr John Small, for Violet, by Kelvio, and third to Mr G. J Bland, for Venus, by Koltlr, whioh last also topis tfoo efOQU|
prfze offered by Mr Gilmour for Uoat. fi 'y by Kelvin, for which he waß .he on y entry. Of geldings of any ag«, there wa. a magnificent show, eight being brought into tbe ring, wh_ohwonldha?ebeenacredl. to any -bow yard lo the world. Of these Mr GHmoar contributed four, Mossrs Clarke Bros three, and Mr J. McCaffetty one. This olass was the theme of general admiration and gave the judgea no little difficulty. The awards were :— First Srlze, Mr J. McOafferty's Wallaoe ; second, Ir John Gllmour'a Charlie by Glen Roy ; highly oommended, Messrs Clarke Brosj Champ ; o immended, same exhibi'orß' Daks. There were no three- year-old geldings shown and onlyoneexhlbtt In the - class for two-year-olds In which Messrs Clarke Bros were awarded a first for their chestnut gelding Prlnoe. Of yearltog colts or geldings there were three exhibited. Honors were awarded as follows : 1 and 2J. Gllmour ; highly commendad, Clarke Bros. The last named | exhibitor! also secured (unopposed) Mr ( Gllmocr'e ..pedal prize for best yearling by Kelvin. Of yearling colts er fillies, there J were only two shown, Messrs Mawaon Bros taking first with Pride of the Isle, and Mr j Small ißCond with a filly by Kelvin out of . Darnell. For best mare or gelding suitable for a carrier's oatt, the Assoola- ! tlon 'a prize, and also the speolal pr.za j offered by Mr Talt, was awarded to Mr Grigg 's Damsel the very beau ideal of this •tamp of horse. For best team of two horses, there were five entries, two owned by Mr Gilmour, two by Messrs Clarke Bros., and one by Mr John Shearer. Altogether this was a very fine class. First prize, also Messrs Steel and Sou's •pedal prize, was awarded to Messrs Clarke Bros. (Champion and Duke) tbe ■erne exhibitors also receiving second honors with a pair of mates, Bess and Marchioness. Of teams of three, there vara four K r»nd __.Mblt», hnnora being •warded as follows :— First, Clarke Bros , Champ, Duke and Bob ; second, Clarke Bros. Bess, MarcMoness and Prlnoe ; Mr Heseltine's speolal prlza for best shaft and lead harness was awarded to Mr John Gllmour.
