STEAM V. SAILS.
Oaptafc Oolomb has recently written a *^ rtry ienitble letter to tbe (> Times " on tttimvtnvs sails. The prime absurdity he polnta oat ii that onr nartl iothorlUei cannot open their minds to the fact that for the propulsion of modern men-of-war sails are as obsolete as the oars of the classical trireme. The blander orer the Imperlease and Warsplte was dae entirely to this state of intellectual stagnation. But the consequences do not end there, for Osptaln Oolomb states his opinion that "at this moment we are taking more trouble to tesch our young seamen and officers the archaic seaman* chip of the square sail, and the nature of the obsolete fitting* conneoted there-, with, than erer we took before." I wonder what would be thought of a rail* way company which should ; insist on all its engine-drirers and stokers learning to drlre fonr-Jn-hand i This is precisely what "My Lords " expect of their employe*.
