COTTON SEED OIL
Two-thirds of the cotton seed oil sold m the States goes to the makers of lard and butterlne and its use to the extent of about 20 per cent haa. It Is stated, been one of the most powerful lr.fl tenoes m reducing the prioe of lard. It Is also being used for cooking, and a large proportion of the oil taken with salads and s&rdlnes It the product of the 0 btou field*. Scientific men declare it fa perfectly wholesome, and some even say thai, it la better than animal fats. It is Rstfmated that not far from 600,000 tons of cotton seed are need m thia induatry every year, and tha ( . from 400 000 to 600,000 barrels of ornde oil are produced, half of which is exported from the States. The oil io not the only produot of the seed. The meal after the oil has been expresied, is eoid, either loose or compressed into cake, for animal food, cattle takiDg to It kindly, and fertilizing purposes. When refined, it la difficult to distinguish batween the cotton and olive oila— " English Meohanic."
