The police, who had been mustered m strong force, prevented the proposed meeting being held, and m keeping the Square clear a great amount of scuffling took place. About two thousand persons proceeded to Hyde Park, where several speeches were delivered, More were afterwards made m the direction of Bayswater, but on the crowd reaching Victoria gate a conflict ensued, owing to the police barring their , progress. The mob destroyed the iron hurdles and seats m the Park. With weapons thus improvised they attacked the police, injuring a number of constables. The police were reinforced to a considerable extent, and succeeded ultimately m dispersing the assemblage, several arrests being p)»rje. . „
