Tbe balance-sheet showed the institution to be m a very satisfactory financial position. Officers, etc., were appointed and .the usual routine business transacted. The . children attending the Ashburton Presbyterian Churoh and Sunday Sohool were entertained last evening m the Churoh. Tea was provided for all at half -past six, and a large number partook of this, always a very pleasant portion of suoh gatherings. At half-past seven a varied programme of music, singing, and reoitations was started, this being carried out very successfully, the per. formers being a number of tho scholars, assisted by some of the teachers and friends A piano was kindly lent for the occasion, aud tho accompaniments were given on this and also on the Church organ. The attendance, both of children and parents was very large, and the whole affair passed off very pleasantly, the behaviour of the scholars being very good. Bey Mr Beattie aoted as chairman, and assisted muoh m arranging and carrying out this altogether very satisfactory, and pleasant re-union. In another column will be found an announcement of a entertainment m the Templar Hall, Tinwald, on Friday night next eonduoied by Mr 0. Ray of Ashburton, whose efforts to give a first class entertainment have been highly successful m the past. Taking into consideration the object of the meeting t«z., to raise funds for the Wealeyan Sunday Sohool Library, it is not too muoh to expect a full house. A complimentary entertainment to Mr Wilkinson will be held at Seaview this evening. The prioe of admission has been fixed at 2s, and this oovera refreshments. An ordinary solution of gum camphor m whisky is said to be a permanent sympathetic ink. The writing must be done very rapidly, bb the first letters of a word have disappeared by the time the last are written. Dipping the paper m water bringa it out distinctly, and it v-. om»a0 m»a iuvisioie again wnen iuu p»poi .* dried. It oan be brought out repeatedly without affeoting its vividnesa. The " Australian Shipping News " regards the story of castaways on the Crozets as a probable hoax. It points out m connection with the Btory of the albatross that there are two points on which doubt and suspicion are jat once aroused :— -First, there ia co name of a vessel given— and what message from the sea but what, as tho first and as the most important part, gives the name of the vessel to whioh the survivors belonged ? —next, there is the exceeding improbability of the message being conveyed within the time. The Crozet Islands are situa:ed m latitude 46.27 8. longitude 52.14 8., and are situated m a direot.line 3128 miles from the spot where the albatross ended his mission and his life. From 4th August to 18th Sept. is 45 days, so that it would require a continuous journey, without intermission and without diviation, of 69 J f miles per day to accomplish it. It is, of course, well known that the albatross could, if it wished, travel at an infinitely greater speed than this ; but without reason or instinct to urge it to continue its flight m the same direqtion, it could never haye been done. It would be going too far perhaps to say positively there were no shipwreoked men on the Crozets at the time who adopted this moans of acquainting tho reßt of the world with their hapless plight, but the preßump. tion is all the other way. I The London Wesleyan Missionary Sooiety has been m existence for one hundrod years. When Queen Viotoria asoended tho throne, fifty yeara ago, it had 51 missionaries m foriogn lands ; now it has 324. Then it had 51 Sunday-Bohool teacherß and looal preaohera ; now it has 3661. A note appears m one of the scientific journals advising people not to eat raw eggs. Many people imagine tggs are more strengthening if eaten raw than when they are cooked. But it appears that a parasite of the common hen, a worm known as Heteratis inflexa, is frequently found alive within the Bgg, having been transferred from the small intestine of the fowl. A terrible tragedy has occurred at Camden, New Jersey. Mrs William Wiltshire went to t Justice of the Peaoo to lodge a complaint igainst her husband for drunkenness. While ihe was bo engaged, Willshire came up and mot his wife and the Justice both dead, and I hen he immediately committed suioido. A social gathering, as a wind-up to the tea meeting, ooncert, etc., recently held by the Primitive Methodist Churoh, waa held m the Church on Friday evening last, where tea waß provided for those present. The choir, oonduoted by Mr Bay, gave a selection of music of a very pleasing charaoter. Mr Lill, on behalf of the Church, made a suitable presentation to Mr C. Kay, and m doiDg bo, thanked him heartily for the care and trouble he had taken with the choir, whioh had re* suited m the concert being a very successful one, and their funds being augmented con* siderably, allowing them to carry out painting and repairs to the building they were then m. Our Mount Somers correspondent writing yesterday says : — Since the unemployed have finished their work here, business and things generally are very quiet, except the weather, but it makes up for the prevailing dullness by most unexpected ohanges. Daring the laßt three weekß the clerk of the weather has run the gamut between arotio and tropical extremes. Three weeks ago masses of snow come floating through the paddooks like icefloes. The Bohool one day became au island m the midst of an ooean, and the children had to be carried to the road through quite a* little torrent, when their time to go home came. Laßt night the cold waß severe, today the heat was almost distressing, and at the very moment of my writing these lines a healthy N.W. breeze (?) is driving a kitohenstair from one end of my verandah to the other. A scientific writer says that a man is young from twenty to forty. This may ba true m some Arcadian communities, but the average city youth m this country is an old man at nineteen. Hanlan is 33 years, stands. sft B}in, ani scales m condition list 21b. Beach is 38, 6ft 9in, and m condition 12st 51b. Cheat measurement 42in, waist 38Jin, thigh 24in, calf 17in, neok 16jin. A new discovery iB that, by the use of citric acid, or citrate of silver, seawater may be made drinkable. By this means chloride of silver is preoipitated, and a harmless mineral water produced, An ounce of oitrio makes a half-pint of water drinkable. Those who have made fun of Gebbart for following Langtry must quit now-. At first it was believed he followed her for fuD, and everybody laughed, but now it is demonstrated that it is business. He is going to marry her. When a man is engaged to a woman, all levity should cease. Some people are very generous. A pious Auokland shopkeeper lost a purse containing £15 the other day. A boy picked it up, and being honest, returned it to the owner. His reward was three lollies. The people of Chicago are about to ereot a theatre or auditorium, which will be one nl tno jargeßL , — . — _-.-«.„ ojhbs m existence. The cast front will be 187 ft m length, and the south front 361 ft. The height of the building will be 144 ft, and of the tower 225 ft. There will be seats for 13000 peopla, and lhe coat is estimated at £500,000. The exterior is to be Buggestiveof the Palazzo Vecohia, and granite ia to be largely employed. To show the heavy reductions at present being made upon farm rents m Scotland, a few examples of recent transactions m farm letting m three counties of Forfar, Perth, and Fife may be given. On tbe estate m Forfarshire of Lord Strathmore eleven large farmß have just been ra-lot to their old tenants at a reduction m eaoh oase of 23 por oent. In Perthshire the farm of Huntingtower has bsen let at £350, while the former rent was £630, and the farm of Montagu at £300 instead of £500 as formerly. In Fifeshire the following farms have lately been let:— Newton of Lathriek at £470, former rent £863 ; Little Frenchio at £260, former rent £323; Dalginch at £284, former rent £400 ; and Randerston at £450, former rent £871. Sir Walter Buller is amongst those who haye been specially invited by the Organising Committee to read papers before the British Association at Manchester next month. The subjeot he has Beleoted is " The Origin and History of the Maori Baoe." Holloway's Pills and Ointment. — The combined ill effects of over-crowding, sedentary occupations, and monotony of life are only too well-known to those who have to pass the best part of their lives laboring m factories and workrooms. The compulsory confinement weakens the general health and induoes chronic oonstlpation, indigestion, and various forms of skin diseases.- Holloway's remedies are of priceless value to persons of this olaBS, for they can be used without entailing lota of work, being purely vegetable m their composition, and consequently aot without harshness on the most delicate system. The experience of more than forty years proves that no means surpass Holloway's remedies for curing bad legs, bad breasts, piles, and wounds of all kindß
