LOCAL AND GENERAL.
At the B.M. Court this morning, before Mr R. Aloorn, J.P., and Mr D. Williamson, J.P., a first offender was fined 5s and costs for drunkenness. Daniel Moynihan, for having been drunk m Oaes street, was fined ss, and for .having resisted and aisaulted Constable Sullivan was ordered to be imprisoned for three days. Washington Solly, tho advance agent of the Mammoth Minßtrels, was m town to-day making arrangements for the appearance of the Company here, but owing to other calls they have had to postpone their performance m Ashburton till the first week m November, A full scene rehearsal of " John Barley, oorn " will take place at the Oddfellowß' Hall on Friday night at eight o'olook. About 47 members of the Rifles (under Captain Dolman) and 36 of the Guards (under Captain Sparrow) paraded at last night's Government Inspection. After all the officers had m turn exercised tho two oompanies m a variety of drill, Major Newall, the Inspecting Officer, addressed the men and expressed his satisfaction with the manner m whioh they bad acquitted themselves. He noticed con. siderablo improvement ninae his last visit, and their manual exeroise, etc, was very oreditable. A number of men wero put through aiming and position drill by SergeantMajor Jones, who also took out a squad for judgiog-distanoe early this morning. In oonsequenae of the duties lovied by Victoria and South Australia on Tasmania products, a strong agitation ia favor of imposing Protective duties is spreading throughout the island. A second meeting was lately held at Biohmond. Tho meeting was a large and representative one, and resolutions affirming the necessity for protecting farmers' produce was carried. A hospital for animals will soon bo erected m London, and at the same time free dißpensaries will be opened where the horseß, | donkeys, oats, dogs, and birdß of the poor can be treated when ill. ' The manufacture of linoleum ia about to get a footing m Germany. At present there are no more than three factories, though the article has been m England for about twenty years. The Edinburgh Agricultural Show was this year, for tho first time, held without exhibits of cattle. It seems that pleuro.pneumonia is bo prevalent that it wai deemed prudent to keep them all away front the show. The Committee of the Auckland Y.M.O.A. has drawn a shower of printer's ink upon its head bj declaring against the introduction of billiard tables into the rooms "btoaase billiards are played m hotels." It will be remembered that some time ago finds of coins were made on the reef* that fringe the beaoh towards the breakwater. On Sunday two boys named Hoskin and another named iWhitoombo, while on the long reef, discovered two single shillings, a penny, and a halfpenny. The ooins wero very bjaok, but when rubbed it oould be Been plainly what they wero. The money evidently oame from tho wrecks of two vessels that ran on tho reef years ago. — " Taranaki Herald.' Mr John Graves, of Shirbeck, Boston, Lincolnshire, has grown one aore of tobaooo this year, and, being a novelty m the district, it hao been visited by largo numbers of people. The field was planted from June 10th to 15th, Considering that it had only one good rain, it made very rapid growth, and was four feet high when topped on August Ist. Gather* ing for curing began on August 15 tb. Competent foreign tobaooo growers who have Been it state that is a magnificent orop of tobaaco. Tho responsibility of the officiating clergy, man or magistrate is made muoh greater by the recent amendment to tho New York Revised Statutes relative to the marriage ceremony. Any olergyman or magistrate performing a marriage oeremony when either of the contracting parties is less than the legal age, whioh is 18 for males and 16 for females, becomes guilty of a miidemeanour, and his liability is not lessened if the patents or guardians are present. The Austrian giant Winkolmeyer, who was fo reoently the wonder of London, is dead. The British Medical Journal says that a number of babies have been poisoned by suoking the green straps of their perambulators. An analytical examination of the straps showed tbe presence of enough araenio m them to kill an adult.
