CATHOLICS AND THE EDUCATION ACT
Wellington, October 18*
The Oatholionof Wellington are about to petition Parliament re the Education Act. The petition aeta forth that Catholics aro required by their faith to hold, and do reasonably and conscientiously hold, that their children should ba taught In aohool religion and morality, along with seeulat knowledge ; that consequently the present purely secular system of education, ai established under the Education Aot of 1887, is utterly repugnant to their conscientious convictions ; that while the/ are compelled to contribute to maintain a system of State education from whioh they derive no adequate advantage, they receive no State aid for the highly organised and most efficient ■ohooli whioh they approve, and which they have ereoted and maintain throughout the colony at great cost and sacrifice, affording thereby sound education with careful moral training to thousands of children, and that* practically saving annually for the Stats many thousands of pounds ; that they are of opinion that this grievance would be effectually redreßßod and the finances of (he colony greatly relieved by State granti m aid to denominational sohooli for secular knowledge only up to the required standard under Government inspection*
