THE FASTEST STEAM YACHT.
«, The Herreshoff Corapaßy has just constructed for Mr N. L Munro, New York, a steam yacLt which has made on her trial trip the fastest record ever known. This vessel, the Now Then, was designed by the famous blind designer, Herreshoff, at Bristol, Rhode Island. She recently made the run from Newport to New York m 7 houra and 6 minutes. Coming through Hell Gate, according to the estimate of her designer, she flew along at the marvellous speed of 28 miles an hour. All the Sound Bteamera going east were passed. The Now Then Is 81 feet long on the water-line, 85 feet ail over, 10 feet beam, and draws 3 feet 3 inches of water. She has a flush deck, and two masts, fore and aft, schooner-rigged, a low pilothouse, and a brass smokestack. Her bow is extremely long, sharp as a knife, and terminates m a long clipper overhang. Her stern ib her most peculiar feature. It runs outward aft from the deck jnst like the bow of a ram, and the propeller is under the projecting part. This projection is designed to prevent a deep immersion of the stern m running at a high rate of speed, and it is said to work like a charm. The engines are of the ttiple expansion type, and the boilers can bear a pressure of 2501b5. Mr Munro says the'name occurred to him when she was building, and he casually remarked, '♦ Now then, we shall do something." The owner is ready to race any steam yacht m Amerioa, including the Stiletto, from Newport to Larchmout, and will give any of them 10 miles. He believes that his boat will beat the Stiletto, because she can maintain her great speed for a longer distance. — "Iron."
