Inthe"Ab Intra " system the tacks are deft'y pnt Into the insole by a handy 'machine, the flit heads of the nails being flash with the surface of. the insole and towards the wearer'a feet, The Insole is then placed on the last with the point upwards, and the upper is pulled over them and made fast by means of a hollow tool, with whloh the operator preaaea down the leather over the point of each nail. The sole is then placed over the protruding points of the nails and hammered down, a few smart blows serving to seoure the sole to the upper and inßole. So perfectly are the three united that it requirou tools and groat force to separate them. The secret of this groat cohesive power lies m the form of the nail, which has a shoulder near its point and m section resembles an open harpoon. Hence, when driven Into leather, tin latter closeß ovor the Bhoulder of the nail and defies all but the most Bevere effjrts to extract it. After the sole has been secured the boot is finished m the usual way, the time occupied m fixing the Bole being about haif that required m the ordinary machine boot process.
