■» Messrs H. Mafson and Co report upon the live stock market m the Ashburton district for the week ending October 7th as follows, viz. : — On Tuesday at the Ashburton j-ards owing to tho inclemency of the weather tho entries both" m sheep and cattle weie very small, and although tho attendance of farmers and others was about an average one, business was languid m the extreme. With the exception of one line all tho sheep came through our hands, and we succeeded m placing fat crossbreds at 12s fid ; good hoggets 8a ; ewes w th 94 per cent lambs at 9s ; small down hoggets 6s -2d, and mixed crossbreds, Gs 9d. In cattle the demand was equally slack. We sold what are called f&t cows, £4 10s, £4 17s 6d to £6 5s each ; spriDgerß, £3 15s to £4 lOs ; yearlings to 265. To-day we hold our usual fortnightly sale of sheepskins, fat hides, and tallow In sheepskins our catulogue represented about 500 skins, but owing to tho late unsatisfactory news from England a drop of from Od to Is m dry Bkins. and from 3d to 9d m green skins I ad to bo submi'ted to. Beet crossbreds with us made 48 lOd to 63 2d ; second quality, 3b 9.1, 4s, to 4s 8d ; medium and inferior, Is, lb 9d, 2s Cd, 3s to 3s 3d ; best merino to 4s 5d A large quantity of dry Bkins were sold by the lb at from 4d to 5d per lb Hides and calfskins, 3d ; fat, |d to Id In Properties we note an improved demand. We have placed Heveral farms during the last month, and we have other sales now pending. Ihe prices are low certainly, but even to be able to dispose of land at any price is, to Bay the least, reassuring.
