BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of tbe Borough Ooonoil was held laßt evening. Present — Tha Mayor, and Ors R. Friedlander, Roberts, Harrison, Williamßon, Reid, and H, Friedlander. mayor's statement. The Mayor eaid that tha debit balanoe at tho Bank was £1116 10s Bi. The amounts which hcd been received sluce last; meeting were : — Asphalt account, 19a 3d j Library account, 18b ; Borough bohl, £1 Is; rent of pound, £1 ; rateo, 1887, £4 6a; total, £8 4a 3d. The amount of rates remaining nnoollected was £63 10fl 7d. CORRESPONDENCE. Lattera were read (1) From the Minister of Public Works, stating that the j matter of providing work for the unemployed would be conßiderad at the first Cabinet meeting, — Tfce Mayor explained the circumstances under which a petition by about twenty-one local unemployed hai been forwarded to the Minister. He said that the Cabinet meeting referred to had been held, bat be had received no reply ; (2) From the Upper Ashburton Road Board, m regard to oulvertß and footpaths on Winter's Road .—Referred to Works Committee ; (3) From Mr B. Hughes, m regard to ao account whioh he stated had been incurred m regard to tha Library m 1884.-Th & matter was allowed to stand over till next meeting to that the Olerk might see if the aooount wa B correct ; (4) From Mr Graham, applying for lease of a Borough Reserve.— Some d acuasion took place m regard to the whole question of leases of Borough aecticns. RESERVES, It was resolved, on th 9 motion of Or H Fnodlauder .--"That it be a rpoommendation to the Reserves Committee to report at the next meeting of this Council — (1) If it is advisable to put up at an early date of the Borcugh reserves tor lease at public auction ; (2) How many of tbe reeervea ; (3) Upon what terms and conditions ; (4) Tho Committee especially to report if it is desirable to have a valuation clause inserted m the conditions of tho leases."
