The Ashburton Guardian. Magna est Veritas et Prævalebit. MONDAY, OCTOBER 3, 1887. LOCAL AND GENERAL

Tho steamer Australia, wbioh sailed from 'Frisco for Honolulu, August 16th, carried m addition to the usual cargo ten cases of arms and 45,000 cartridges. It is estimated that the wheat crop of France will amount to 300,000,900 bußbels, against 283,000,000 m 1886. Russian harvest reports are satisfactory. William Henry Fitzmaurioe, of Auckland, has given notice m the "Gazette" of an intention to apply to be registered under the New Zealand Medioal Praotitioners Aot. It is repor iod that a woman 60 years of age. atßoßeville, Ark., recently gave birth to twins, Unole Sam is bound to be at tbe top of tbe olass. An editor who has reaohed the advanced age of ninety attributes bis long life and excellent health to the faot that he never expeo'ed to please everybody, and never tried to do so. The large Bible belonging to the wife of John Milton, and whioh was used by herself and her husband for so many years, is now added to the library of the British Museum. Milton has annotated it m pen and ink. Tbe number of men m tbe armies of Europe on tbe peace footing is over 3,000,000, and on the war footing (between 10,000,000 and 11,000,000. The cost of European armaments is estimated at about £600,000,000. An orchestra of women, who are all players of brass instruments, is making a sensation m Dresden. Tbe ladies have an engagement for Vienna next winter, where they will play at a series of balls among the aristooraoy. Mr John Solomon, lessee of the Alexandra Theatre, Melbourne, is one of happiest men m Australia at the present time. He was brought beforej^e Bench the other day and fined half a sovereign for having his house overcrowded. The Sydney Seoularists are about to build a | hall. At the first oall one enthusiast planked down £1000, ;two others subsoribed £500 eaob, and not a few followed with modest fifties. A Bill before tbe Senate of Minnesota pro* vides that an assault by bludgeon or pistol upon an editor, reporter, or correspondent for malicious libel shall not be considered a violation of the Penal Code. The following, which is of interest to wheat-growers, is an extraot from a letter reoeived by a gentleman m town from a friend m Melbourne who used to hold a prominent position m Christohuroh m connection with the wheat trade :—" I have studied the Indian wheat question m that oountry itself, aud am oertainly of opinion that oolonial and American farmers have a harder nut to oraok than they will find either profitable or agreeable. One thing 13 quite certain; oolonial wages must oome down. How oan a New Zealand farmer expect to compete against Indian farmers when the average rate ot wages he pays is never as low as 5a per day, against 2 annas (or less than 2£d) per day m India ? What India wants is better methods of sgrioulture, and then the colonies oan say 'Good-bye' to wheat-growing for export. One may read for a lifetime about India, but understand it one oanuot till one visits it and goes well up into the Upper Provinces and Native States." g Dyspepsia, billiousness, nervousness and miserableness all cured with Hop Bitters, Genuine made by American Co. See Statutory Declaration.— l, Fraz Baabe, Ironbark, Sandhurst, m the colony of Viotoria, Australia, do solemnly and sincerely declare tbat on the 25th June; 1877, my son Alfred, six years of age, was accidentally hurt with an axe on the knee. lat onoe took all pains to secure medical assistance. However, m spite of all .Sorts, on the 27th August, 1877, the opinion was given by Dr Maogillivray tbat an amputation of tbe injured limb had become imperative, m order to save' life. At this juncture I called on Messrs Sander and Sons, procuring some of their Extraot of the Eucalyptus Globulus, and by the application of the same X had tho satisfaction of seeing my son within a fortnight out pf all danger, and to-day he is recovered. J #?ay just add that it was when the crisis had been reaoj^d that the Extraot referred to was first applied, And I make this Bolemn declaration, etc,,-_-Franz Baabe. Deolared at Sandhurst, m the Colony of Viotoria, Australia, this seventeenth day of Ootober, one thousand eight hundred and seventy- seven, before me, Moritz Cohn. J.P.— [Adyi,

We understand.that Miss Margaret Todd, a J pupil of the Otdrtsey Distriot School, has j been successful m gaining a prize m the recent essay competition under the auspioes of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Christohurch. The objeot of the Parihaka meeting that has just concluded was (says the Taranaki '« Herald") for the purpose of arranging a presentation of 2,000 head of oattle to Te Whiti. The meeting was a most representative one, there being natives from miles , distant present, It will naturally be wondered where Te Whiti is going to graze Buoh ,a large number of cattle, but this will [readily be seen when it is stated that he has sub- '■ divided the land around Parihaka into large , paddocks, securely fenced. In future no pigs will be at the settlement, and it ia said that the few porcines that survived the recent slaughter have been already killed. The cattle above mentioned will be contributed by natives m all parts of the colony, and should the gigantic soheme ever be carried out, Te Whiti will be the runner of a ranche of considerable n_aguiti.de. A native who attended the late meeting informed a pakeha that things were m a bad state at Parihaka, but whether he took this view of matters . from the fact that two natives bad died there on Tuesday, and a couple of days before that a woman was found dead ih the bush, it is . hard to conjecture. The next phase mTe Whiti'. career, viz., a ranohero, ought to be , hailed with satisfaction by everyone, as he really seems determined to put the native i land m Taranaki to what it waa intended for, viz.) oattle and sheep grazing.

Jt is reported that piece, of gold have been discovered by the miners m tbe bed of th c Mawddaoh, North Wales, and the investigation seems to confirm the statement that the bed. of the river is impregnated with gold, whioh has probably been washed down from the hills. Some fifteen years ago a rush was made to the neighborhood of Dolgelly and the valley of the Mawddaoh, where rioh quartz containing gold had been found. The Ciogan Mine was opened ; a oompany, of which Mr John Bright was one of the directors, wa formed, and for some time upwards of 1000z a of gold per week sent away from the mine. The Cwmoian Mine, situate at the head of the valley, is still at work ; but it is alleged the enterprise was greatly cheoked by the heavy royalty laws. The income of the Free Church of Sootlaud last year, for foreign missions, was £97,229, the largest sum ever realised by the Ohuroh for that purpose. There are m the missions 27 principal and 150 branch stations ; 40 ordained, 4 medical, 22 teaching, and 23 female missionaries (beßide SI missionaries' wives) ; 24 native preaohers, 310 native teachers, 11 European evangelists and artisans, 154 native helpers, 5,206 Communicants and 16,614 pupils m sohools. Mrs Langwortby has obtained a splendid triumph (writes tho London correspondent of the " Melbourne Argus "on August 12). She h&B aooepted an offer of £20,000 (exclusive of all oosts) m satisfaction of her breach of promise suit, with an apology from the defendant for all his libels against herself and her Bister, Miss Long. Mrs Langwortby, sen., has given a bond to seoure the annuity of €500 to tbe child Gladys, who is to remain with her mother ; and upon the conclusion of these matters the adjudication of bankruptcy made against the fellow Langworthy is to be annulled. All this, of oourse, is additional to the payment of over £4000 alimony and costs ordered by the Divorce Court. Before the case was [settled upon the terms given above, Langworthy had met with another rebuff from tbe Court of Appeal, whiob, on Saturday previous, upheld the decision of the Offioial Receiver refusing to hear Lang worthy's counsel on the assessment of damages m tho breach of promise as long as the bankrupt was m contempt, and declined to come within the jurisdiction of the Court. It was stated that the follow was skulking m the neighborhood of Brussels and Ghent. He will now probably come to England. The meet, ing with his mother, who has nearly perjured herself for his sake, ought to be interesting. Mrs Kendall, the illustrious British ao tress, has for some years been making £8000 a year. " I began my career," she said, "at three years of age ; now lam thirty.eight. I bave known bitter poverty and great trouble, but that is m the past. At twenty I wa . married to the best and handsomest man m tho world. We bave nothing m this world that we have not bought out of our own earnings. I have never aooepted threepence worth from anyone." Holloway's Pills. — Teaohings of Experience. — The united testimony of thousands, extending over more than forty years, mo_t strongly reoommends these Pills as the best purifers, the mildest aperients, and the surest restoratives. They never prove delusive, or give merely temporary relief, but attaok all ailments of the stomaoh, lungs, heart, head, aud bowels m the only safe and legitimate way, by depurating the blood, . and so eradicating those impurities whioh are tbe source and constituent of almost every disease.
