SUPREME COURT

Wellington, October 3. The Supreme Court opened to-day. There are thirteen charges against fifteen prisoners. Many of the charges are of h_coeny and house breaking, and for the most part of a petty oharaoter. A true bill haa been found against Mary Miller for larceny. ,-.,_, Chfistohuboh, October 6 The oriminal sittingß opened to- day before the Ohief Jnst.ee, who m his charge said:— "l find there are 21 persons against whom there are 27 charges . The number, I believe, ia rather greater than is usual at the oriminal sittings here. I regret to find that amongst them are several youths, lads of 16, 17, 18 or 19 years of age, and that more than ose of these appear to be returned as Few Zealand born. These are features which are not by any meanß satisfactory. I regret •lso to state that there is no adequate mesne of dealing with persons of this age should they be oonvioted. They are too old for reformatories and It Is not desirable that they -hould be sent to yaol vheta there is no provision for classification- The probationary system, again, Will not apply to theae persons beoanse they wquire to be pnt under the control of some striot but well qualified master Thtra Is no provision nnder whioh this eto be done m New Zealand " Chat. Balion pleaded guilty to larceny ot a blcyole, and Jas. Stevenson to horsestealing. John Fisher was found guilty of breaking into and stealing. Sentences were deferred, Dunemn, Ootober 3 At the Supreme Court John Barrowmar pleaded guilty to horse stealing. Evidence was called to show tbat he is cf weak Intellect. His Honor said that on account of this evidence and the prisoner's youth he would disoharge him on his own recognisance to come up for sentence when called opon. The Grand Jury ignored the bill against the youths obarged with indecent assault, Wm. Morrißon, housebreaking, received 3 years. William Carey pleaded guilty to damaging property and was sentenced to two months John Matheson, for assaulting and robbing a Chinaman, waa released on probation for twelve months, and ordered to contribute weekly instalments towards the prosecution
