STORY OF THE WitECK
A Melbcnrne telegram m the " Hobart Mercury " of Sebtember 22nd gives the following particulars of this wreck . — The schooner Awarua, which arrived to-day from New Zaalaod, briDgi seven •orTlvoTß of the barque Derry Cattle, which «v wrecked on Enderby I«I»nd, one of the Auckland group, fifteen being drowned. The Derry Oastle belonged to Spafght and Co., of Limerick, and was a barque of 1317 tons. She left Geelong on 12th March laxt with a cargo of wheat for a port of call m the United Ki> c dom, under command of Captain G fie. ■■d nothing wa» heard < f her, and about a month »go srrlous opprchemuns were fait as to her Bafety. It was only to day, however, that news reached Melbourne of h«r tad fate eight daya after her leavirg Oeelong. £he it ruck op on Enderby Itlaud whilst going about twelve knots, and m a yerjr few minutes the ill-fated vessel became a complete wrvck. The boats were •U ■.maehed and n hole knocked In her bottom, and all tbe masts but the m'zeu had gone by the board. Feven of the orew, with one passenger named James M'Gee, were washed ashore and survived, but the eaptalu and fourteen of the officers and orew were all drowned. Tho survivors were put to great privations, as they were on * ban en island, whilo there were no means of subsistence One of the Govern • xnent depots, which are established on many of the islarjde, wbb dlecovered, bat it contained nothing but a bottle of Bait, for ten days they were without fire, bat fttlaii they mansged to explode a revolver cartridge atd got fire. For three months they remained on this barren rock, feeding on seal, fith, rabbits and grain which had been washed ashore from tbe wreck At length they made a raft of lumber and reached the Government depot at Fort Roei, where they obtained some stores •od clothes. They remained there until ftbout ft month ago, when the Awaroa providentially put In there on a eeallrg voyage and took tbe shipwrecked mariners •way. They had Buffered terrible privations. D Crane, steward ; Carlson, carpenter; TV. CsrJion, tailmaker ; Caarleß Williams, boatswain ; A. Quid, a.B. ; Autcnl Ment»/A.B/; H. M'Glll, A.8.; W. Scannel, O.S. ; Peterson, lock-out man ; Edward Reid, seaman ; H. Veithier, book. M'Gill, m signing artioles, assumed the name of Gilbert.
