A DISPUTE ABOUT TOMBSTONE
Wellington, September 29. A n extraordinary dispute Is at present being carried on between the United Ancient Order of Drnids and the local authorities of the Church of England. It appears that members of the Excelsior Lodge are anxious to erect a Druldioai monument over the remains of their late brother, William fiowden, which ara interred m the Anglican Cemetery. It is proposed that the memorial sh^ll consist of a rough arohway of stone !u the form familiarised by illustrations of Druldlc remains found at Stonehenge, namely, two upright slabs of atone, with a horizontal top alab stretching across. Bishop Had* field, however, raises an objaotion to the erection of the monument on the ground that the design represents an emblem of paganism, and, therefore, cannot be allowed m a Chtiatian cemetery. To-day a deputation from tbe Druids waited on his Lordehip asking him*so withdraw tho objection, but he emphatically refused. The authorities of the lodge intend to seek legal advl.se as to whether they can erect the monnmant without the Bishop's consent,
