CHINESE INGENUITY
The Japanese not only detest the Chinese politically, but also have a profound abhorrence for tbeir manners and customs, especially tbeir debasing use of opium. The whole energies of the Custom House officers are devoted to preventing the Importation of this drng, employed with auoh baneful results to the Chinese. The stringency of the regulations on this head combined with the maniacal desire of the Chinese population to indulge ihelr favorite vice, havo caused them to exert something more even than their native ingenuity m the hope of procuring a stock. One instance of this, related by Major Knollys, is worth mentioning. A Chinaman on me occasion landed with two fine European cats. The animals were not much m request and they would have been allowed to pass unnoticed but for the fact that, while one of the creatures was moving about, its fellow was apparently snnk m profound sleep, undisturbed by any movement. The Custom Honse officer shouted " Stop a minute, coolie ; let me stroke pussy." Pussy waß revealod stuffed most artistically up to the very eyelids with opiunx
