We hear a gooe deal about foreign competition, but It seems to be powerle. a as again the British shipbuilder. Despite b r unties and other artificial aids, foreign countries are doing nothing towards lessening the enormous preponderance of the British merchant fleet. The annual retu-ns just published by the Board of Trade show that, including the colonies, the British m trine exceeds by more tban 1,200,000 tone that of every other nation put together. Whilst the BrltUh merchant navy laßt year represented 9,323,615 tons, that of Germany, whioh comes next to the United Ktngdom, was only 1 282.449 tons ; and of France, only 1,000,215 tons. Although the tonnage built m the United Ktngdom last year was less than m any year since 1869, It was six times more than that built by any other oountry Even more remarkable is the way m which the passengers trade is being monopolised by our vessels. Thirty years ago more pasaengera left the United Kingdom m foreign bottoms than Britlah; now, of a total of 295,0.0 passengers carried last year, all but 4000 went m Biittish bottoms.
