Auckland, September 24. What seems to have been a deliberate ■ttempt to wreck a passenger train from Helensvile to Auckland waa made last night, when three large Btoues were placed on the rails at a creasing. They were discovered by Mr Batkin, who at once removed them. The police have the matter m hand. The Steamer Bellinger, chartered by the Seamen's Union, arrived from Newcastle to-day. She is to undergo an overhaul, •nd commence running next week. At tb t. Supreme Court to-day an application for a new trial m the caw of Hoera lor perjury w»» refused. ar.d prisoner was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment with hard labor. Aiken, for ottering a valueless cheque, rec.lved a sentence of eighteen months, with hard labor. Bulls, September 24. At an Inquest on the body of a Maori fonnd m the bush near Sandon, a verdict cf felo de se waa returned. The body hj»s been identified as that of a Native rangatira, from Upper River. The motive ior committing the act oannot be explained. Gebymouth, September 25. The Ohau took awaj 23460zs of gold for transhipment to Wellington. It Is reported here that Captain Williams will shortly go home to ?et two steamers bnllt for opening the coal trade with tne far east. Moulmein (British Burmah) being mentioned as the particular port.
