WAKANUI ROAD BOARD.
A special meeting of this Board was \ held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. to consider f evidence that may be brought forward by the persons objecting to the taking of land for a road through Seotion 14980 (Mr W. Jamieaon'a.)
Tho members of the Brard present ware : Mearra M. Bruce (chairman) Jus. Brown and W. T. Lill. Most of the objectors Binning the petition were prtaont and other ratepayers. M>o. W. Fumell, nolcitr. appeared on behalf of Mr Jamleaon, through whose land it ia proposed to take the road. Mr Purnell, in addressing the Board, said he trusted the Board would well consider the wishes of the largo number of rat*.* payers who had objected to this work. He pointed out that if the Board pet' aisted in carrying out the work, it rendered itself liable for heavy compensation. It was aIBD optional if the Governor's assent would be obtained ; the objections raised were .sound onaa. With reference to Mr Meredith Wilson's action, he pointed out that though the River Road had been washed away for years, it was only just lately that Mr Wilson found he wan inoouvenieaoed. He said that the Board Home month* ago had oiled a ratepayers' meeting, whloh was weil attended, and had condemned a proposal to take the road in the manner no iv Bought. A oatoh resolution waa brought before the annual {nesting to take the road through, and was < nly carried by the oisting vo'e of the Chairman. If the Board were acting ia accordance with the wishes of the smaller mesting,. they Biirely thou'd consider tha views txpreesei by tho 'arge meeting at Wakanu'. Mr Poroell then oalled Meßsrs W. Jamieoon, D. F.tz'erald, D Leddy, Job WUboo, R. Maxwell, W. Brown, b. MoLeary, Gk Oole, J Doak, S. Brown and others, who more or lean expressed the view that the road was of no benefit exoept to two ratepayers, and would probibly wheu opened out have the effect of sending the flood water that way and damaging property. Mr D. Wilson addressed the Board and supported the objeotion. Messrs J. Brown and M, Wilacn questioned several who gave their evidence to prove that the opening of the 17 chains at the lower end would effect no more damage than is at present liable from flood. Mr Meredth Wilson addressed the Board in aupport of the road. The ratepayers then withdrew, and the Beard considered the matt r. It was resolvei " That consideration be poßtponod till next meeting of the Board," Mr Brown dissenting, Kll'B. The rate waa confirmed, and the Chairman and Mr Brown signed the rate book and tho meeting adjourned.
