The Ashburton Guardian. Magna est Veritas et Prævalebit. MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1887. LOCAL AND GENERAL.
<► At ths R,M. Court this morning, before M r T. Bullock, J.P., Edmund Gale was fined 10s and.coita for drunkenness. Herbert and Fitzgerald's London Circus performs this evening. The priceß of admission are Sa and 2p; half children price. ___ A requisition is being got up asking the Mayor to proclaim Monday next, the day of the general election, a public holiday. James Huddlestone Carleton, arresttd at Pleasant Point on Saturday, was brought up at the R.M. Court this morning befora Mr T. Scaly, J.P., charged with the larceny as a , bailee of two horses, the property of Hugo and Rudolph Friedlauder. He was remanded till Thursday next. I Next Sunday the anniversary of the AshburUn Wesleyan Sunday Sohool is to be celebrated, on whioh occasion ths Rev J. J. Lewis, of Christchuroh, will preaoh morning and evening. Appropriate hymns have been seleoted to be sung by the soholars, and on the following Tuesday, 27th mat., a charming service of song is announced to be given m the Church. In addition to the voices of a large number of well-trained children, valuable assistance will be rendered by members of the Wesleyan Church choir, who have so often oatored to the musio-loving folks of Ashburton with oredit to tntmselves and pleasure to thoir audiences. It is stated that many sooiety women m Chicago lost heavily by the, break of the wheat corner, and that m some cases their husbandß refused to settle their losses. On Saturday evening Herbert and Fitzgerald's London Circus opened at South Rakaia to a full house, and the whole company fully deserved the repeated applause. Mr Organ has evidently bestowed much attention on his Bronco horses, each one performing when called .by name m a most perfect manner. His horses at "see saw" were thoroughly up to their work. Mdlle Leon's tight rope dancing was much admired, also Bartolo's contortions and hoops and glaBS trick. Mr Bishop as musical clown brought down the house. Mr Herbert with the dancing barrel was most successful. The concluding item on the long programme created much amuse* ment and clearly showed that circua riding is not bo easily learnt aa man; imagine. The Company, one and all, are fully entitled to the praise they have received m other New Zealand towns, and the public m Ashburton will not regret giving their patronage this evening. A great drawbaok to the Domain has hitherto been the absenoe of seats. Som« time ago Mr J. Tasker, recognising this, got up a subscription list, the result being that Mr J. R. Steele was entrusted with an order for a dozen seats, these, it is needless to Bay, being turned out m the workmanlike manner oharaoteristia of Mr Steele's productions. Last week the seats were arranged m the Domain, being disposed at those spots from whioh the best views can be obtained. The oonvenienoe thus provided should prove a great boon, and Mr Tasker is deserving of warm thanks for the trouble he hai gone to m the matter. We have been asked to men* tion one thing m connection with this subject. Some one has already cut portion of the I woodwork of one of the Beats, and as trees have also been damaged, steps have been taken to keep a watch, and an example will be made of any offender who is deteoted, An English paper Btatea that recently two men entered the house of a farmer namad Savage, residing m Townland, Monaydarrabeg, near Kilkeel, and found his wife and himself^ dead m bed, both having died evidently of starvation. When searched £20 was found sewn m Savage's clothes. They resided alone. It is estimated by competent authorities that the singularly good winter we have had m New Zealand^ will make a difference of considerably over a quarter of a million sterling m the value of our wool export, not to speak of the good promise m store for the farmers.
Some ohemioal combination which pro- \ duced the vilest odour imaginable was set free at Mr Scobie Mackenzie's meeting at Naseby on Friday evening. The sfcenoh was simply abominable, and a number of persona were compelled to leave the room for a time. It is said that the person who took advantage of hia knowledge of chemistry to annoy his fellow townsmen|at the meeting is well known, and if this is bo he certainly ought to be prosecuted. — " Otago Daily Times." We have to acknowledge the receipt of the " Wellington Landed Property Guide " for the ensuing quarter. The usual large amount of useful information is to be found m its pages. | Most of the properties offered for sale appear i for the first time, and mane of them are well known and very deiirableones. The " Guide " is issued gratis, and by sending an address to Messrs T. Kennedy Maodonald and Go., Land and Mercantile Auctioneers, Wellington, copies can be had reguarlly every quarter.
