THE LANGWORTHY APPEAL CASE
1 Mr Lingwotthy having appealed to Sir James Hannen against the award of the registrar m bankruptcy, fixing the annui'y to be paid In reepeot of the child Gladys at £500, the appeal was contemptuously dismissed, like Mr Langwqrthy's other appeals, and this question may be considtred as settled. Mr Langworthy has fu ther been moving m the Divorce Court to make absolute the decree declaring that the so-called marriage at Antwerp was null and void, and here be has been told that as soon as he has paid up ereryhhlng m the way of alimony, the ohlld's annuity to date, and costs, the court will do what he wishes. He has agreed to make the payments accordingly. It is understood that the official reoeiver m bankruptcy will now settle the amount of damages to be awarded to " Mra " Langworthy for breach of promise of marriage, and that this sum w : ll also be made over. But this depends upon the fate of a bill which has just been introduced into Parliament to leg Uiee certain Antwerp marriages, including the Langworthy marriage, performed by the Rev Dr Potts. A division was taken upon it recently, and tho numbers being equal, the Speaker gave hia casting vote for the postponement of the measure. Sinoo than, however, the opposition to tho bill has been wi'hdrawn, and it may become law— that is, if the House of Lords does not intervene. If the bill succeed, Mrs Langworthy will have a substantial claim to permanent alimony, and if it fails, the olatm for breach of promise will go on. • And then an effort j may be made to get Parliament to legiti- ! mine the child Gladys. Whatever happens, Mrs Langworthy "s complete triumph (b at j hand.—" Otago Dally Times.''
