The ADhburton Guardian. Magna est Veritas et Prævalebit. SATURDDY, SEPTEMBER 17, 1887. THE OPPOSITION TACTICS.
The latest move of tho Opposition party and their organs has quite put into the shade all their former achievements. We have m former articles showed how they have thrown honor to %he winds, aud had abandoned themselves to misrepresentation, misstatements, distortion of facts, and to slandering their opponents by dissemination of insidious rumor. It is easy to make assertions of this kind, but we have proved them by giving instances. Bat their latest achievement, as we have already said, j quite eclipses any of their previous efforts. Perceiving as if by intuition that the sense of the country was against them, and indignant at the leader, Major Atkinson, having received a vote of censure at Hawera, it would seem, they determined to retaliate by doing their level best to ensure the defeat of Sir Julius Yogel for Christchurch North. The task seemed a hopeless one, for Sir Julias is so strongly enthroned on the seat for that electorate that his position seemed impregnable, so much so, m fact, that it has deterred all opposition, (Still the exigency of the case required that something should be done, and the directors of the party were equal to the occasion. Their course was plain . They had only to create a rupture between feir Julius Yogel and his constituents, and then put their own man m. They found a willing tool m the " Wellington Times." A "rumor" was started by that journal to the effect that Sir Julius Yogel having thrown overboard his former constituents intended to oppose Mr G. Fisher for one of the Wellington districts, and that Mr Robertson, the Ministerial candidate, had resigned m favor of Sir Julius. Simultaneously Mr [ Cass announces himself a candidate for j Christchurch North. This was a nice little plot, and might have succeeded but fortunately Sir Julius was m Wellington and promptly contradicted the rumor before it had time to do the intended mischief. From this despicably mean dodge on the part of the Opposition we may infer how desperate their case is.
