PR TECTION IN AMERICA.
The Christchuroh " Press " publishes the following extract from a letter received by Mr F. J. Garrick from Mr John Evans Brown, formerly M.H.B. for St. Albans, but who has for the last three years been living m tke United States : —
" I do hope that the constituencies will net adopt protection, as it would be the death knell of the oolony. I say, after much inquiry and observation m this sadly overwoighted proteotion oountry, that while wages are higher m New Zealand than m the United States, you are manufacturing and selling at a price from 20 to 50 per cent, lets than here. Howland, for instance, is manufacturing buggies better m every way at 68 per cent, less than they oan be purchased ia the United States. The Kaiapoi Mill Company are manufacturing woollens aud selling at ii good profit at least 25 per cent, ehciper than can be purohased here. The rariflf m the United States is simply for the benefit of the capitalist and to the detriinet> ; of the - wage earner. Everything is laxml because one industry is protected, consequently a man m America oan hardly use anything which is not protected to death. Tnere are more Btrikes end more " tramps " m this country than all the world over, and yet the ignorant populaoe are persuaded by the designing manufaoturiug party to vote for protection. I am heartily sick of hearing the platitudes aud statistics on both sides, still I cannot refrain from mentioning the subject whe* writing to you. I presume you will again stand for St.Alb3ns."
