MR WALKER AND THE WORKIKG MEN.
TO THE EDITOR. SiR, — In my harable opinion I should say Mr Walker haa forfeited the oonfi denoe of the wcrUng man, presuming, of oouise, that he ever bad it. I allude to ix measure that was brought before the Houae last session entituled the Eight Hoars Bill, a necessary measure for the proU ction of workmen. Mr Walker voted against thia — will he ploasa state his reason for bo doing, perhaps he consider 12 or 14 hours a day for 4s 61 wage ifcoat the right thing, as one of the members of the Houae put It They were ready enough to listen to the reqaes's of merchants, bankers, and squatters, and call that attending to their duty ; ory out the moment anything Is tald about the weak and unprotected — that it Is pandering ; electioneering, ard mike similar unwotthy imputations. Mr Walker In voting against thia Ignored tho principle that was at stake m protecting the weak against the strong. Also, his support of the Customs Duties BUI, a measure to inoreaae taxation to the tune of £186,00^). And as Mr Vincent Pyke nays, £166,000 of thia will have to be bVne by the poorer classes. "Is tbia not equal to a reduction of tho wcrking man's pay 1 " I think, Sir, yon will agree with me tbat it is, seeing that ho will have to pay an Increase prloe for the necessaiies of Hfe> But as the Bill has not paeoed, and I trnly t vet tbat It never will, I would Bay wcrking men Btudy your own interest, and vote for measures not men. Seeing that this appeal to the country \n inoreaaed taxation or not. Mr Walker's support of the *bove BUI was another proof of hie support to the monied portion of the community to the coat of the Hornby Handed.
