New Plymouth, Srptemler 15 Nominations of candidates for Tarauak electorate took place at Waiter a to-day at loon, when the following were nominated : -John Elliott, Thomas Kelly, George Albert Marohant, and. Robert Trimble. A. poll was demanded. Accident. Grbymouth, September 35. About midnight Joseph Vincent, chief 000k on the Korinui, got bis foot badly crushed by an empty ooal truck running over It. He was crossing the qoa> to go on board, and waited for the warning generally given, and when he heard what he thought was a 1 clear, he was going acroßs the wharf when he found an empty truck almost upon him. He threw him* self down to prevent being killed, but the wheel paiied over hit left foot, crushing bones and sinews. He will most probably lose hla foot. He waa taken to the hospital. Writs for Libel. Thornton, head teaoher at the Greymouth State Sohool, intends to take proceedings against certain members of the Sohool Committee on account of the libellous natcre of certain published atriotures on him. It la also probable that the assistant teacher Olimenta, will take proceedings against at leaßt one member of the School Committee for libellous remarks c ncerning him. A threat made by the Chairman of Committee to oloae the school yesterday morning *as not carried out. The Maitai Wreck. A large gang of men were employed aboat the Maitai yeaterday. Estimated cost of fbating her, about £500. Inquest. Christohuuch, September 15. The inquest- on Oathol MoLeod, killed by falliog down the bold of the Rotomahana at Lyttelton on AugUßt 23, concluded to-day. A verdict of accidental death waa ieturned. No blame attaohable to offioera of the vessel. Education. Duwedin, September 15. The Edqcatlon Board have received a letter from the Education Department, saying resolution re syllabus did not reach Wellington till July 25th. Ihe Board now reply that their resolution, to whloh exception waa taken, was adopted unier misapprehension. Mr Hielop said had he been a member of the Board he would have ol jeoted to the resolution to which the Department very properly had taken excaption. Adulterating Milk. At the Ciiy Court to-day Jaß Craig was fined £3 and cost 3or a week's im prisonment for adaltering milk. The Bench characterised it as a very fl 'grant case.
