ASKBURTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The ordinary monthly meeting of thn Ashburton School Committee was held last evening at the Boroagh Sohool. Present — Messrs J. 0. Duncan (Chairman), E. Dimact, R, E'ston, J. W. Sivrle and A. Oiok. FltfAtf ial The Chairman said the credit balance at the bank was £23 4i. CORRESPONDENCE Letters wore read (1.) From tho Board of Education otating that the school would bo examined by the lonpectors on i Monday, September 19th. (2) From the aatne asking tbat a supply of suitable paper be prooared for the examination m drawing. — It waa decided to authorise tbe headmaster to procure the paper. master's report. The report of tbe headmaster was read as follows : — The attendance at the Bchool for the Bix weeks' ending September 10;h, 1887, wiu as followa : — No. on roll — Boyß, 192; Girls. 202; total, 394 Average— Boys, 152-9; Girls, 152 7; total 3Q5 6 The master also forwarded lists of thoee who did not attend 20 tfmea during the month of August with reasons for abaenoe. — These reasons were mainly on aooount of Bickneaß. EXAMINATION Mr Dlmant suggested that it would be advisable to inform the Board of Education tbat a year had not olapaed sfnoe the la'.t examination, and thus allow the teachers every possible ohano?. Mr Braddell, th? secretary said that the Board had an object io acting ai they had. They deaired to have all the country eohcole examined m the anmmer, so that the children mi^ht all attend, and with this object m view they desired to have the Bchoola m towns examined m winter. Mr Diraant said that might bo so, bat «ti;l he thought the Committee Rhonld Consider tho interests of the teachers as muoh as was fair. Ha therefore moved tbat the attent'on of the B >ard be direoted to the fact that the examination this year is to bo held a month earlier than It was laet year. Mf Sawle thonght the motion might have the effect of causing the Biard to think the the Committee wera unduly considering the interests of the teaoheroj and they might thus be harder m the staff than they would otherwise hnve been. Mr Dlmant did not think the Board would look upon the resolution m tbe spirit Mr Sawle thonght it possible they might. Afrer a brief discussion Mr Cook leoonded Mr Dimant's motion and it w&b carried. VI^ITIfTa COMMITTEE. Mr Els' on, reported having visited tbe school. He reported as to the fence between the mastet'd aeotlon and tbe adjoining property, Khlch had been stated at last meeting to be m disrepair. The matter was left m the hands of the Chairman. Me Blaton also reported that several small remairs were Deeded about the sohool. The schoolmaster was authorised to have the repairs attended to. RACK DATS. > As Mr Silcook was abienr, his notloe of motion having referenca to holidays not being granted m fature on the ccoaslon of race days waa ordered to stand over till next meeting. VISITING COMMITTEE. Messrs Sawle ani Cook were appointed • visiting committee for the "ensuing month. PAYMENTS. Accounts amounting to £10 10s 5d were passed for payment. ABSENTEES. As it was reported that a nnmber of children whose names were on the Ashburton sohool roll were attending the Hampßtead school, the chairman was authorised to ascertain the names cf these with a view to getting them struck off the roll, as they at present counted a» absentees as against the Aahburton school. The Committee then adjourned.
